First aid courses for construction workers

The construction industry in the UK is one of the largest sectors in the country, employing millions of workers and contributing billions to the economy.

It is also one of the most hazardous industries, with a high risk of accidents and injuries. According to statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in 2021/22, there were 30 fatalities in the construction industry, and over 59,000 non-fatal injuries were reported.

Additionally, 40 fatalities were reported in the same year, with the majority of these being due to falls from height, being struck by a moving object, and being trapped or crushed by equipment or collapsing structures.

These figures demonstrate the need for stringent health and safety regulations and training programs within the construction industry. In particular, first aid training is an essential component of keeping workers safe and reducing the number of fatalities and injuries in the workplace.

First aid training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide immediate assistance to those who have been injured or become ill while on the job. It covers a wide range of topics, including CPR, choking, bleeding, and fractures, as well as the proper use of first aid equipment and techniques for handling emergency situations.

It’s important for workers in the construction industry to keep their first aid training up to date, as accidents can happen at any time, and having the ability to act quickly and effectively can make a huge difference in preventing further harm or even saving a life.

Not only is first aid training important from a moral and ethical standpoint, but it is also a legal requirement for all workplaces in the UK, including those in the construction industry. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 state that employers must provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure the health and safety of their employees while they are at work.

In high-risk environments such as construction sites, employers may be required to provide additional first aid measures, including having trained personnel available at all times, a well-stocked first aid kit, and an emergency plan that outlines the steps to be taken in the event of an accident or injury.

It is important to note that failure to comply with the HSE may result in serious consequences such as imprisonment for up to 12 months, an unlimited fine, or both, upon summary of conviction.
