Less than two months to go and the big day will be upon us. No, not Guy Fawkes… It’s the day MP’s in the House of Commons will have the chance to implement first aid courses in every secondary school in England.
Thamesmead Labour MP Teresa Pearce is backing the bill having launched “Every Child A Lifesaver” campaign supporting a Private Member’s Bill that would require all state schools to provide first aid courses to students.
While to us parents it seems a no-brainer – 95% of Moms and Dads agree first aid courses should be included in the secondary school curriculum. Unfortunately, we parents aren’t always that great at taking out own advice… With staggeringly low numbers of people attending a First aid courses in London – less than 10% us Londoners have attended a First aid course in the last 3 years.
While 95% of parents want to see First Aid in secondary schools. Our reality is very different. Ms Pearce, the Thameshead Labour MP claims only a 25% of secondary schools currently provide CPR education, with approximately half of them teaching defibrillator awareness and only a measly 10 per cent teaching both.
It’s a sad sight for Ms Pearce who stated that “if we want to save lives, these numbers have to be higher”. She goes further to mention that to “give people the absolute best chance of surviving (we need to) equip them with the skills to keep them alive while the ambulance gets to them and transform the next generation into potential lifesavers.”
Ms Pearce, we couldn’t have said it any better ourselves! We at Siren training offer First aid courses in London and nationally. We have Open First Aid courses for the general public and we are happy to hold a private first aid course for your workplace or community.
The Bill has the backing of St Johns Ambulance, Siren training and the British Heart Foundation and is due to have its second reading in Parliament on November 20. Please stand with us and urge your local MP to vote in favour of this bill.
