Every 5 years the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) review the latest research and evidence in resuscitation and Emergency First Aid, they then go ahead and release updated guidelines.
The lovely Firefighters at Siren training have summed up the long document to include all the key points you need to be aware of.
Please find the more important changes below:
- Seizures are now to be considered a possible reason of cardiac arrest.
- Elevation is no longer recommended for the treatment of bleeding.
- Chest wounds should be left to the emergency services.
- There have also been some changes in how to handle Asthma suffers. First aiders should be taught how to administer an inhaler and how to use the spacer device.
- Burns should be cooled with water for an absolute minimum of 10 minutes.
- First Aiders should ‘ask someone to call 999’ after double checking for normal breathing.
- Breaks during the ventilation shouldn’t be longer than 10 seconds.
- Finally there is an increased focus for workplaces to have an AED on site and Defibrillator training. The research proves that you increase the chance of survival by approximately 10% for every minute sooner the AED is used. Thus the government is especially encouraging workplaces to invest in this.
